2C was a gallery operated from a commercial unit on Albert Road in Southsea, Portsmouth by Jon Banthorpe and Sandra Zaffarese. It ran from 2000 until late 2002.
The gallery was an independent, self-funded artist run space that intended to show the work of its founders and invited artists. More incubator than gallery, the space employed a policy of keeping work visible 24/7, and maintaining regular shop opening hours.
The space itself consisted of an exhibition space with shop window in front, a small office/studio and darkroom in the rear and a poster space on the exterior side wall. Experimental in its nature, central concerns were the public nature of exhibiting and the questioning of gallery norms including market responsibilities and relationships, show structures and the curse of the ‘opening’.
